Some of the attractions listed in our Top Spots require a day or half a day to enjoy fully. Robben Island, for instance, is a 45-minute boat trip out from the city, and the tour of the island and its buildings – often conducted by a former inmate of the prison – takes two or three hours.
Cape Point Nature Reserve is about 40 miles from the city and setting aside a whole day is recommended because there’s so much to take in. Likewise, the penguins at Boulders Beach can be found a short distance from Simonstown, South Africa’s principal naval base, which is some 25 miles from the city. Another ‘must-do’ trip is to Stellenbosch, the heart of South Africa’s wine industry, about 30 miles out from Cape Town. There are about 200 impressive estates, most of which are open to the public - with plenty of tasting involved! Details at www.stellenbosch.org.za
