It’s a place where old and new converge – in history, architecture, cultural pursuits and the essence of its people. There are graceful thoroughfares, handsome buildings and glittering shops. But it’s not possible to travel to Cape Town without being made aware of the legacy of the Apartheid system. The continuing and yawning inequality between white and non-white communities is made graphically clear to new arrivals as they drive in from the international airport, passing mile after mile of makeshift shanty homes.
