It’s less
For a long time it was a colony of the United Kingdom, but Hong Kong was returned to Chinese sovereignty in 1997, taking on a key role in the spectacular growth of the Chinese economy. It became a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China, yet has remained markedly different from the mainland. Hong Kong maintains its own identity with a strong cosmopolitan flavour, fuelled and inspired by constant immigration from mainland China, from elsewhere in Asia and from the four corners of the world. It all adds up to a place that’s chaotic, intriguing and puzzling but never, ever, dull.
