Thanks to Austria’s efficient public transport system, day-trips from Vienna are easy. The elegant spa town of Baden even has its own tram link with the capital. Though no longer the fashionable holiday retreat it once was, the town is still a good base from which to make a brief foray into the neighbouring Wienerwald (Vienna Woods). Another possible day-trip is to Eisenstadt, a sleepy provincial town near the border with Hungary that’s associated with the composer, Josef Haydn. Heading up the River Danube is another popular way of day-tripping from the capital. There’s the glorious monastery of Klosterneuburg, the town of Tulln - birthplace of the artist Egon Schiele - and the beguiling town of Krems-Stein.
