Language

In addition to Greek, people employed in the tourist trade generally speak English as well as some French or German.  So it’s relatively easy to get by in Athens without attempting to say anything more complicated than moussaka or retsina.  However, those wishing to elevate themselves above the humble tourista might like to learn a few basic phrases in Greek.  The language itself deserves this mark of respect; not only is it beautiful, it is also one of the foundation stones of almost all other European languages.  Moreover, getting around the city is much easier once the Greek alphabet has been mastered, even though most signs are in both the Greek and Latin alphabets.

Currency And Tipping

Euros

Greece is a long-standing member of the European Union and adopted the Euro as its currency in 2002.  A Euro comprises 100 cents.  Menu prices at most cafes, restaurants and tavernas include a service charge, but it’s still customary to leave an extra 5-10% on the table for the waiter.  Just as important as any such gratuity, however, is your appreciation of the food you eat.  Greek waiters and restaurant owners are proud when you tell them you like a particular dish. Taxi drivers, porters and room staff will also appreciate a small tip.

Safety

Though the crime rate has risen in recent years, Athens is still considered to be one of the safest cities in Europe. However, here are a few tips: keep your money and other valuable items hidden away in a safe place while walking around the city and especially on public transport; avoid poorly lit or dark deserted places at night; beware of bar hustlers who will try to get you to drink at a place that has exorbitant prices.  And a word about the weather: the Greek sun can be extremely harsh. When out in the open on a sunny day, sunscreen and a hat are a must. And make sure you re-apply that sunscreen every 2-3 hours.

Weather

Summers in Athens are generally dry with next to no rainfall and plenty of hot sunshine.  Between July and September, the temperature hovers around 35C (95F). Winter is wetter and cooler, with temperatures occasionally dropping to zero.  However, mini heat waves, with temperatures rising to the mid-20s C, are not unheard of in winter.

Getting Around

Metro Athens

The Athens metro is one of the most impressive mass transit underground systems in the world.  While its main purpose is transport, it also houses Greek artefacts found during the construction of the subway (make sure you visit the station on Syntagma Square).  It currently operates three lines, which are distinguished by the colours used in the relevant maps and signs (green, blue and red).  The trains run every three minutes at rush hour and every ten minutes at other times. Athens is also well served by buses and trolleybuses, but the routes are generally not much use to visitors other than for getting out to the suburbs or completing an onward journey from a metro stop.  A tramline connects the southern suburbs to the city centre.  Taxis are available, but they can get snarled up in traffic, especially during the rush hour.  Fares are reasonable, but ask your driver for an estimate of how much your journey is going to cost before you set off.  And don’t be surprised if he picks up another fare while you’re already in the cab.

Travel tip:  You can buy a day travel ticket for 3 Euros or a weekly for 10 Euros.
This is valid for all Metro lines, trams and all city buses.
