Stockholm, Sweden

“A polite and friendly place they call ‘The Paris of the North’, is a buzzing metropolis whose boutiques and restaurants can hold their own against just about any big city on the continent…”.

Getting There Getting There

Air

Planes at Arlanda Airport

You can fly into Stockholm on scheduled flights from points all over Europe (including all the major capitals).  There are some direct links with the United States, but chances are you’ll have to make a connection in, say, Zurich in Switzerland, Frankfurt in Germany or Brussels in Belgium. Stockholm’s main airport is Arlanda, which is about 28 miles north of the city centre.  The Arlanda Express train, which runs every 15 minutes, takes just 20 minutes to reach the central station.  The fare is 200 Skr. The cheaper option is the Flygbuss service at 95 Skr.  Buses leave Terminals 2, 4 and 5 every ten or fifteen minutes and the journey takes 45 minutes. Tickets can be purchased at the Flygbuss counter at the main airport terminal.  Taxis operate from outside the terminals.  Speak to a cab co-ordinator and agree the fare before you set off.  The cost to central Stockholm will be around 350 Skr.  Arlanda’s website is www.lfv.se/templates/...

Bromma Airport, about 5 miles west of Stockholm, is used for some domestic flights and handles about a million passengers a year.  Its website is www.lfv.se/templates/LFV_AirportStartPage____16345.aspx.
Skavsta Airport, 62 miles south of the city, is also used for domestic flights and some low-cost carriers. www.skavsta-air.se/en
Västerås Airport, located 68 miles northwest of the city, is the hub for Ryanair.  There are trains and buses running into the city every hour (130Skr), and a taxi will run about 1,300Skr. www.vasterasflygplats.se

Train

Centralstation

Stockholm is the hub for national train services run by Statens Järnvägar (www.sj.se) and Tågkompaniet (www.tagkompaniet.se).  Direct SJ trains to and from Copenhagen and Oslo arrive and depart from Centralstationen as do the overnight Tågkompaniet services from Gothenburg via Stockholm and Boden. With a bit of ingenuity, it’s possible to construct a journey from say, London, without getting on an airliner.  You could take a train from London to Harwich (on the Essex coast), sail from there to Denmark by cruise ferry, take an inter-city train to Copenhagen, then the sleeper to Stockholm.  Leaving London at 1418 on Day 1, you’d arrive in Stockholm at 0555 on Day 3.

Road

Driving in central Stockholm is not recommended. Small one-way streets, congested bridges and limited parking all present problems. If you do have a car, one of the best options is to stay on the outskirts of town and catch public transport into the centre. Stockholm has a wide network of bicycle paths and there are plenty of shops hiring out bikes.
