Although there’s plenty to keep you busy in Stockholm, you might be interested in catching a boat across to the Åland islands. Technically Finnish, the islands are unique and autonomous with their own flag and culture and are popular for summer cycling and camping holidays.
The whole archipelago around Stockholm is surprisingly accessible and very rewarding. Regular boat trips offer great opportunities for outings. Here’s a pick of the outlying islands:
- Arholma – noted for its traditional village and chapel and fine sandy beaches.
- Ängsö – a national park characterised by meadows, virgin woodland and magnificent displays of wild flowers.
- Finnhamn – a 900m long island with rocky cliffs and a small beach.
- Sandon &n
dash; wooden houses, narrow alleys and superb sandy beaches.
More details about these outlying islands and how to reach them can be found at www.waxholmsbolaget.se/...
Another option for a longer trip from Stockholm is a visit to Gothenburg or Göteborg, Sweden’s second largest city and the biggest port in Scandinavia. It has elegant squares and canals and is a centre of glass-making. The fastest train journey from Stockholm is about three hours. Details on www.sj.se
