As well as the Everglades, mentioned in our attractions guide above, there are other trips from Miami to which you could drive yourself or join an organised tour. Orlando, with its Disney World and other theme parks, is about 200 miles north of Miami. Then there are the Florida Keys: the scenic, lazy drive from Miami can be very enjoyable if you have the patience to linger and explore the diverse towns and islands along the way. Allow at least two days to work your way down and three or more days once there. Key West, 159 miles south-west of Miami, is the most renowned island in the Lower Keys and the southernmost point in the continental United States. Made famous by Ernest Hemingway, this tiny island is an extremely popular destination, overrun with cruise ship passengers and day-trippers. More than 1.6 million visitors pass through each year. Palm Beach County encompasses cities from Boca Raton in the south to Jupiter and Tequesta in the north. But it’s Palm Beach, the small island town across the Intracoastal Waterway which has been the traditional winter home of America’s aristocracy – the Kennedys, the Rockefellers, the Pulitzers, the Trumps, titled socialites and plenty of CEOs. Palm Beach is 65 miles north of Miami and is lined with jaw-dropping palatial estates of the rich and famous. Head north and drool.
