Hotel Lindrum
By John BorthwickThe Lindrum is a mid-town hotel that overlooks and overhears a city’s heartbeat. Just down the street Flinders Street from Melbourne’s fascinating new Federation Square complex is the stately 19th century façade (and 21st century interior) of the Hotel Lindrum. If you love art, trams, coffee, theatre, design, the Melbourne Cricket Ground and the National Gallery of Victoria, plus privacy, vast parks, more art and more trams, then a front room here takes in the lot. And theres a bed big enough for a pasha. The architects retained the classic features of the historical building, while showcasing a chic interior. There are 59 well appointed rooms (in four different room categories) with rich wood furnishings and classic polished floors. Legendary billiards champion Walter Lindrum, after whom the hotel is named, described his game as "the art of simple things [done] to perfection." Which also sounds like a fair formula for a fine boutique hotel.

"Hotel Lindrum is hip and hospitable, with a good location just on the edge of central Melbourne and a warm atmosphere."
Hotel Lindrum
By Matthew Barker
Well turned-out city centre haven that hits the middle ground running between designer see-and-be-seen scene and classic comfort zone, with a warm, resonant interior (lets hope brown is the still the new black, or at least the old grey) and unruffled service. 59 rooms. Hotel Attractions: The stylish, small restaurant and bar (complete with amply stocked humidor and billiards table) are both big on lose-yourself-in leather upholstery. Bookings can be arranged for a health club nearby. Local Attractions: Conventional wisdom has it that Melbourne is Olivia Newton-John to Sydneys Madonna. Unfair dinkum - this is an enjoyably cosmopolitan, modern city with bags of understated style (and probably didn’t want the Olympics anyway...) The Victorian Arts Centre houses the Melbourne Concert Hall and State Theatre; the Southbank is a buzzing cultural hot spot with plenty of riverside cafes to people-watch from. Travel out to Beates Restaurant at Studley Park Boathouse for excellent modern Oz cuisine and some inspiring views of the Yarra River and surrounding bush, or theres Box, just around the corner from the hotel. The Queen Victoria Market is one of the citys must-visits: a maze of food stalls (deli specialities, tapas, fresh fish, most everything else you can think of) and myriad other goodies.
