Detailed Review
This Art deco small hotel has a Zen-like minimalism to its 39 rooms, with their timeless designer furnishings it will soothe any spirit. And the natural treatments at the day-spa will ease the most recalcitrant jet-lag away. There's also an achingly stylish indoor pool and deck overlooking St. Kilda - though of course you are only minutes from the beach, and steps away from shops and bars galore. It feels like you have found Melbourne's inner sanctum of cool.
There are four categories of room. Layout and details vary, but lacquered dark woods, charcoal wool throws and bamboo towel ladders are the hallmarks. Large windows ensure that all the rooms are flooded with natural light, though hallways can feel rather dark. Expect top notch linens and deliciously comfy beds.
Most of the deluxe and standard rooms face inwards; it's worth investing in a superior room to get the sea-facing balcony - boxy, but great for people-watching and star-gazing. Or, if your budget can cope, the premier suites are gorgeous, with spacious sitting areas, simple but seductive bedrooms and huge Phillippe Starck bathtubs in the bathroom. The cheapest rooms, branded singles, in fact have double beds but not really enough space for two.
