Modern designer
Located in Downtown Vienna near Karlsplatz, this luxury hotel is surrounded by some of the best 19th century Art Nouveau architecture which Vienna is so famous for. The Old Town is a UNESCO Heritage Site and the hotel is within easy reach of the many famous coffee houses, parks, opera houses and museums of this classy city. The Das Triest is 10 minutes from St Stephen’s Cathedral and the Mozarthaus Museum.
Behind the glass doors of this design hotel in Vienna lies an unexpected treat. Laid out by British designer Sir Terence Conran in 1995, this luxury hotel combines modern minimalist ideas with comfortable amenities. The modern hotel building was a former coach station on the route from Vienna to Trieste and is now situated in three pleasant gardens.
The 75 rooms of this luxury hotel are simply designed with smooth lines and interesting splashes of primary colour. The double beds have built-in headboards and nightstands whilst white bedcovers give the rooms a clean, uncluttered air with a touch of Viennese flair. Blocks of colour, Conran’s signature touch, are seen in the armchairs and carpeting. Designer names abound with Philippe Starck table lamps, Artemide light fixtures and handcrafted upholstery by Wittmann. Bathrooms are all-white affairs with delightful design features such as the circular backlit vanity mirror. Stainless steel fittings and porthole windows add a modern nautical flavour. Rooms have the latest technology including wireless LAN internet connections, a phone and fax, satellite TV and VCR.
Cult followers of hip design hotels seek out the luxury hotel suites at Das Triest for its individual highlights such as a dining table and side chair set made of vertical steel wire rods by Warren Platner for Knoll, perfectly matched by the celebrated standing lamp ‘Arco’ by Achille Casteglioni hovering over it. Specially commissioned black-and-white photographs of Trieste and Vienna complete the rooms’ décor.
The Das Triest offers a choice of dining locations. The most romantic is the outdoor courtyard, where tables are set in the gardens beneath shady greenery. The team of chefs create a delicious menu of modern north Italian cuisine in the 70-cover Restaurant Collio. The Silver bar has a masculine, clubby atmosphere with dark leather booths and all-glass tables beneath subdued wall lighting.
The two meeting rooms of the hotel are somewhat bleak and stark but very functional with air conditioning. Guests can stay trim and fit with the fitness centre with its own sauna and solarium. Das Triest is a great designer hotel which is well located for tourists in the centre of Vienna’s downtown.
