- Location

Located just south of the Tiergarten Park on the Kurfurstendamm, the Ku’Damm 101 is conveniently close to the Schaubühne theatre and the famous Kafé Kranzler. It is within walking distance of the centre of Berlin and the surrounding area is known for its excellent shopping. There is a subway station close by for easy access to the Brandenburger Tor and museums.

- Highlights and Features

Cleverly converted from an office building, the Ku’Damm 101 Hotel was considered hip enough to be highly commended in the European Hotels Awards for New Hotels for Interior Design when it was completed in 2003. Now giving an unreal sensation of retro yet futuristic designs, this luxury hotel offers comfortable accommodation for business guests and vacationers alike.

The Ku’Damm 101 has spacious public areas decorated with tasteful contemporary artwork. Starkly modern in style, the hotel has white walls and grey flooring throughout.  Each of the 170 guests rooms continues the colour scheme with grey roller blackout blinds and bright white curtains and bedding. Subtle splashes of colour in the modern German-designed furniture soften the institutional effect. Furnished in an extreme minimalist style, the rooms are well appointed with air conditioning, WiFi internet, a moveable TV and an immaculate bath or shower room. The allergy-free rubber flooring takes a little getting used to.

After taking breakfast in the panoramic rooftop restaurant, spend time in the fitness suite or head out to the nearby shops. With on-site parking, quiet gardens, a lounge bar and choice of meeting rooms, the Ku’Damm 101 is one of the most comprehensive luxury hotels in Berlin. Not surprisingly it is a member of the World Hotels Comfort Class Collection.

    Ku’damm 101
    By Caroline Major

Perhaps it’s the high-gloss grey resin on the floor of the breakfast room of this Berlin statement hotel that gives it an institutional air. Or maybe it’s the hospital-style trolleys laden with healthy, image-conscious breakfast food that cause NHS flashbacks. However, Ku’damm 101 manages to combine practical function with late 20th-century design in a successful (if somewhat confusing) pastiche.

The wide, soundless corridors of what was once an office block are now adorned with larger-than-life 70s-style numbering and dim, emergency exit-like lighting (in pink). All the pointers say hotel but at some deep, internal level the public spaces suggest a futuristic airport or maybe even a secret, high-tech research lab. It’s even easy to imagine oneself on board a spaceship inside this 170-room behemoth. In fact, this is a disused office block, now reconceptualised. What a trick from the Swiss Design couple who have engineered this spacious, shining and standout conversion.

    The rooms:
The greyscale colour palette at work in the hotel continues into the rooms with white tiled bathrooms built in. Lots of windows, shielded with sheer white drapes, soften the grey roller shutters that whir smoothly over the exterior, putting full daylight or complete darkness at your control. Crisp white linen with hypoallergenic pillows urges a sleep check in to ensure you wake fresh and alert for the next day’s service. Splashes of pink, pastel green or violet blue make sensitive focal points in the room and guests are encouraged to move the furniture to configure the room for personal comfort.

All in all, another day in 1984, but gosh, isn’t it nice! Perfect for the pragmatic business traveller interested in comfortable functionalism.

'Central, caring, connected' is how they describe themselves - still, they won 'highly commended' category in the European Hotel Awards 2003, for New Hotels for Interior Design.
