    The Ritz-Carlton Schlosshotel
    By Matthew Barker

Recently converted private mansion just on the edge of Berlin city centre (but feels like its deep in the countryside). The Karl Lagerfeld-designed interiors are pleasingly plush; a Sunday supplement take on country house posh. Some suites have balconies overlooking the forest. 42 rooms (12 suites). Member of The Leading Hotels of the World. Hotel Attractions: The Vivaldi restaurant is a well turned out, indulgent place with menu to match (pheasant breast in salt crust with white pepper sauce; lasagne of scallops with white truffle oil sauce); there’s also Le Jardin bistro, the Catalina and Le Tire Bouchon bars, the Schloss-Garden (for occasional al fresco dining) and the Lobby Lounge. Spa, saunas, solarium and physiotherapy in the fitness centre. Local Attractions: The Grunewald forest is the city’s largest, a telling reminder that Berlin is an urban blot in the middle of the green swathes of Brandenburg, and home to the Strandbad Wannsee, the largest in-land beach in Europe. The Brandenburg Gate is twenty minutes away (by foot); Jil Sander (and pretty much everything else) on the Kurfurstendamm, a five minute walk away, or there’s the endless flea markets dotted around the city (the best to be found at Strasse des 17 Juni).

  • Regent Schlosshotel Berlin
    By Ken Scrudato

It’s not a matter of questioning the good taste of the royals. It’s just that all that messy class-division was so unseemly. But in a post-Hapsburg world, even the media elite can afford the occasional royal fantasy, if they resign to save up their pennies. And Berlin’s Regent Schlosshotel is the place to live truly like ein konig, if only for a weekend. An aristocratic palace dating to 1914, it was recently given an aesthetic makeover by his-royal-flamboyance Karl Lagerfeld, meaning it is now as chic and outré as it as gilded. Set in the Grunewald, or “green forest,” it’s a verdant alternative to staying in the heart of Berlin, and affords guests the ever-possible thrill of bumping into Herr Lagerfeld, who keeps his own suite here. Grand is hardly the word.
