"Hamburg's Grand Dame since 1909"
Kempinski Hotel Atlantic
By Matthew Barker
Nautical but nice nonagenarian overlooking the city-centre Outer Alster Lake. The impressively large, high-ceilinged rooms combine fin de siecle grandeur and spruced-up comfort with plenty of tecchy must-haves. 241 rooms (13 suites). Member of The Leading Hotels of the World. Facilities:Large sauna area includes sun bed and massage facilities; personal trainer available; in-house salon and beauty parlour stock plenty of Chanel goodies. Or theres always the bar - resident mixologist Gerardo Goffredo conjures up a mean Manhattan and the restaurant does a neat line in Sunday brunches. Local Attractions:The Reeperbahn still retains some Brelesque swagger, but by and large the accordions and red lights have been replaced by pumping house music and bright flashing neon. Not many sailors either. Restaurant wise Zum Heidekrug, Anno 1905 and Agentur are good bets for some trad German cuisine; the Grossmarket is worth a punt, while the Jungfernstieg has a reassuringly posh air. The Kunsthalle remains a cultural high spot.
