In Italy, more than anywhere else in the Alps, mountains mean sunshine. Lying on the southern slopes of the Matterhorn, Cervinia is a pine-fringed winter resort in the awesome Aosta valley. The Hermitage is a relatively modern hideaway, with a cool-looking grey stone and wooden façade and a spacious, elegant interior that will appeal to travellers who favour a less quaint style. Situated in the middle of magnificent ski country, the hotel nevertheless has more than enough sport to offer indoors, with a swimming pool, a gym and a beaute et remise en forme centre for pressing away the worries of the outside world. The bedrooms range from formal and elegant to wildly romantic, each with its own character, some with burgundy walls, some chartreuse green, and all with broad beds, old framed photographs and mahogany desks. The rooms are balconied and many have views onto the Matterhorn. The original building dates back to the 18th century, vestiges of which time can be seen in the antique fireplaces of the suites. The walls and ceilings of the drawing room are lined by smoothed timbers and warmed by a huge, Cubist fireplace; the beechwood corridors contain antiques from the Aosta.
