Classic Tyrrhenean Sea palazzo
La Posta Vecchia is situated about 40 minutes west of the city of Rome, overlooking the Tyrrhenean Sea.
This fabulous boutique hotel was once the home of eccentric billionaire, John Paul Getty. He bought and restored it and it was opened as a small luxury hotel in 1990. Nowadays it is an aristocratic seaside hotel called La Posta Vecchia, which means ‘The Old Post Office’. However you would be hard pressed to find another Post Office so cram-jam full of splendid antiques and artifacts from ancient Rome. Exquisite marble floors, wooden beams and the Gobelins tapestries adorning the walls complete the look and feel of this magnificent palazzo. During the restoration work, the remains of two Roman villas beneath the palace were uncovered, dating back to 2BC. The rooms and the objects found preserved within them are protected in a small underground museum which hotel guests are welcome to visit.
With just 19 individual rooms, each named after a previous famous guest, this luxury hotel has marvelous sea views from its prominent sea-front position. The hotel continues to be a showcase of Getty’s many treasures, including a bed which belonged to Medici and baths carved from solid marble blocks. It brings a whole new meaning to the term ‘marble bath-room’. In keeping with its former status, this magnificent luxury hotel has its own private beach, with volcanic black sand which is common in this area.
The fabulous indoor swimming pool is set in a spa-like atmosphere and complements the hotel beauty centre. A concierge, valet and friendly professional staff discreetly serve guests to ensure that everything is perfect.
The Cesar restaurant is a local talking point, offering the very best Mediterranean cuisine. It has a sought-after Michelin star as an accolade of its achievements. During the summer, meals can be enjoyed on the open terrace, with soft sea breezes and magnificent sea views. Guest reviews declare that La Posta Vecchia is the best luxury hotel in Rome, and it certainly offers a unique experience in an unrivalled setting.
