19th century classic
Situated in an ideal location just off the Grand Canal, the Hotel San Cassiano is in the heart of the quieter San Polo/Santa Croce district of the city. Set within a warren of alleys and squares, the great art treasures of Titian, Bellini and Tintoretto can be found in the nearby Scuola do San Rocco and the Gothic Frari Church. The hotel is close to the Pescheria and looks across at the lovely Ca d’Oro or Golden House. The main sights of the Basilica and the Piazza San Marco are all within easy walking distance from this luxury hotel. The water taxi stop is right outside the door.
An opportunity to relive history awaits those who stay at the delightful luxury Hotel San Cassiano, once the home of Venetian artists, Giacomo Favretto. It is still known locally as ‘Ca’ Favretto’. With just 36 traditionally furnished rooms, this boutique hotel is in an impressive Gothic residence, originally built in the 14th century.
The guest rooms are all individual and unique, ranging from small and homely to lofty and spacious with exposed roof beams, and all are reached via the old wooden staircase (no lift). As well as being tastefully decorated with period furniture, this boutique hotel also has a fine collection of antiques which gives the hotel a unique history and atmosphere. Superior rooms have courtyard or canal views, luxury fabrics, golden headboards and wall sconces. Up to date WiFi connections, cable TV, a minibar and air conditioning make the rooms not only very charming but comfortable and practical too.
The Hotel San Cassiano is certainly well located right on the water’s edge and the outdoor verandah makes the most of this location. Overhanging the canal it is a small but delightful place to enjoy an early evening drink watching the world go by in gondolas and small boats. A complimentary breakfast is served in the sunny breakfast salon to ease guests into the day.
The Hotel does what it does well. It has good accommodation but no restaurant or fitness facilities. However the excellent price, considering the prime location of this boutique hotel in Venice, reflects these slight omissions. There are many delightful restaurants in the area for dining, and most guests get plenty of exercise in their daily explorations of the city on foot.
