Traditional Moroccan
Tucked at the end of a quiet street or ‘derb’ in the heart of the medina, the Dar Warda is conveniently located close to all the Marrakech’s attractions. At the centre of the old medina is the Jemaa El Fna, a large square with many stalls, traders, snake charmers and entertainers. Nearby is the souk, a series of narrow alleys with traditional shops and bazaars selling rugs, leather goods, metalwork and handicrafts. The Koutoubia Mosque and the
Dar Warda is a stylish boutique hotel in Marrakech’s old medina area. Like many riad hotels, it can only be reached on foot, but staff will transport your luggage to and from the taxi in a local handcart, which is all part of the medina experience. Within the walls of the city are a maze of narrow streets, all lined with traditional riad homes. The only evidence of their existence are the ornate heavy doors in the extensive solid walls. The door opens into a furnished reception area beyond which is the traditional courtyard garden. Dar Warda’s garden is cool and private with pots of local greenery around the inviting swimming pool.
The four small but comfortable guest rooms are arranged around the courtyard, each with their own private terrace and b’hou area overlooking the gardens. Beyond the brick wall are countless roofs, minarets and the odd palm tree and the distant sounds of the city add to the exotic atmosphere. Riad homes are a typical feature of Marrakech and many are centuries old. The Dar Warda has been stylishly modernized to meet western standards yet uses many local crafts, materials and colourful tiles to retain its authenticity. The flooring is local marble-like tadelakt which also features in each of the luxury bathrooms which are beautifully finished and spotlessly clean.
Each room is furnished is solid traditional style with antiques blending easily with more modern furniture where required. Beyond the guest rooms this boutique hotel offers a small library and a lounge sitting area around a cosy fireplace for cool desert evenings. Soft lighting and cushioned benches offer plenty of quiet nooks for relaxing after a day in the noisy, bustling souks but there is no TV here. The friendly staff will take care of guest’s every requirement from mint tea and a delicious local breakfast to a full dinner served in the dining room of this homely boutique hotel. The aroma of the spices as the local dishes are prepared to order all add to the ambience of this unique boutique hotel experience.
