Client Review

We have just returned from a week's holiday in Marrakech and feel compelled to write a review for the first time.Having found La Sultana on the web and readseveral reviews we were looking forward to our 6 night stay. On arrival we were given a night time tour of theriad and marvelled at the architecture and detail of the property. In the morning weexplored. and in daylight you can really appreciate thecraftsmanship and beauty of this property. I'm afraid I have to report that if you stayhere then there is a big but attached and that is service. or should I say the lack ofit. The staff are wonderful andfriendly. the surrounding areamazing. the foodgreat. if a littlepricy. but there is no communications between thestaff. 50% of our orders were never completed and whenthey were it took an inordinate amount of time to arrive. Expect to wait an hour to have your fire lit ifat all. On a sidenote. La Sultana is a cold riad atnight. which didn't seem to be a problem at other riadwe visited for dinner (LA VILLA DES ORANGERS) We had an early departure on Friday and booked breakfast for 7.15. needless to say it never turnedup. even after several phone calls and actually goingto reception to check on its progress. It may seem a petty complaint but it wears youdown over the days. When you pay top dollar rates you expect topdollar service. It has put us off ever going back to LaSultana. It is quoted in several reviews that the ownerswant to remain 'fiercely anonymous'. so do the management! We have had no responsefrom the management about our complaint as yet. say nomore. Come on La Sultana Management pull yourBabouches up at get things sorted..

I must tell you that we had wonderful time at La Sultana.Everyone was very nicethere. We were lucky that it was the opening day in 2003when we arrived so that no one was around. We stayed at Crocodile Room (jr.suite) which waswonderful. We had breakfast at rooftop overlookingMarrakech. that was alsowonderful..

After five great days at La Villa des Orangers.followed by four in Essaouria (in the simple butabsolutely charming Dar Loulema). we had hoped to finish our trip with a relaxingday at La Sultana where we checked in on 26th December. At first glance our suite (the LionSuite. Euro 545) wasincredible. as was the architecture of the hotel and thespa. Unfortunately service proved to be a realproblem: it was almost impossible to have tea coffee or the like promptly delivered to our room. and checking out was an absolute nightmare ( 7.30am...no one was present who had the authority to take a payment from me; then after c15 mins an extremely rude chap at the desk appeared but even he didn't seem to have a clue)...and it was almost impossible to find a coffee or the like. The experience was akin to spending an evening atFawlty Towers (including water pouring from the roof of our shower...then it did rain)... Thatsaid. we were determined to enjoy ourselves and laughedit off in the hotel's Bar (the nautical themed bar and its fabulous barman are the hotel's two redeeming qualities.) Staying at La Sultana made us appreciate just how good and well-run La Villa des Orangers was.

I have stayed in many TravelIntelligence-recommended Hotels ranging from the Albergo in Beruit to the Beit Wakil in Aleppo. They have all been great ...sadly La Sultana hasproved to be the exception to the rule..
