The Herengracht (or Gentlemen's Canal) was originally built in 1614 as a site for wealthy Amsterdammers to contsruct their imposing houses, in which they lived and conducted their business. More than three centuries later, the Hotel Ambassade was founded in one of these houses.
Over the years the hotel has been considerately expanded, and now boasts a total of 59 rooms in ten canalside houses. In these historic surroundings, guests can enjoy a stylish and personal service that the Ambassade has made all its own. Hotel Ambassade is privately owned and it offers all the advantages of this modern age but with the valuable heritage of a bygone era.
Traditional canal house
Situated overlooking the Herengracht canal on a quiet cobbled street, the Ambassade Hotel is a short walk from Rembrandt Square and the centre of Amsterdam. Dam Square is also just a few minutes away from the hotel.
The Ambassade Hotel is perfect for guests who want to wake up beneath the low beams of a real Amsterdam Canal house, fling open the narrow windows and look down on the activities of the cobbled street and canal below. This charming hotel is housed in a terrace of ten 17th and 18th century canal houses. It has 59 delightfully individual rooms along its maze of corridors and staircases. Each room is prettily decorated and adequately furnished in keeping with the age of the building. Large windows give a light, bright air to the otherwise small rooms. Internet access is available in each room, along with a business centre at reception. Cable TV, a minibar and a room safe complete the luxury hotel amenities.
Although the Ambassade Hotel is light years away from a purpose built five star luxury hotel, but in its own way it offers a unique perspective on the city from behind the lace curtains. The blue and cream breakfast room hosts a generous breakfast buffet beneath the chandeliers to start the day well. Explore the guest salon, furnished like a typical Dutch sitting room with heavy red and gold décor, antiques and Persian rugs on the floor. The grandfather clock ponderously ticks away the time.
The guest library is another surprise. As the Ambassade Hotel is a popular location for book launches, the library is full of signed first editions! Another great benefit of this hotel is that you can rent a bicycle to explore the city the traditional way, on two wheels. As parking can be over ten minutes walk from the hotel, this is a great idea during your stay. Privately owned, the Ambassade Hotel offers personal service and a historic atmosphere from its convenient location on the Herengracht, or Gentlemen’s Canal. It is the perfect choice for those who are seeking an intimate luxury hotel in Amsterdam with plenty of local character.
