"Good value hotel with functionally mimimalist decor: a standby rather than top choice"
Hotel Actual
By Jenny Pidgeon
The Actual is located just around the corner from La Pedrera and directly opposite the Hotel Omm, against which it comes off rather badly in comparison. However, its low rates are a big draw and there are enough good things about this hotel to keep it in consideration. Owned by the same people as a nearby interior design shop, the Actual had good potential to be successful amongst Barcelona’s new crop of design hotels, but the overall feeling of the place turns out to be more functional minimalism than luxurious chic. Located in the heart of the business and commercial district of Barcelona, the Actual lends itself naturally to being a business hotel although the lower weekend rates also pull in a decent number of leisure guests. The small brown and white reception area, with a couple of sofas, sets the white/chocolate/slate tone for the rest of the hotel. A mezzanine level offers a café/bar where a cold self-service breakfast can be found in the mornings, and it feels very much like a cafeteria, decorated with unoriginal black-and-white photographs. The room leads around the corner to a slightly sad and optimistically-named ‘reading room’ which smelt of stale cigarette smoke, with brown suede chairs and a television surrounded by shelves holding fake book sleeves. Half the room is squashed by a dirty, low, sloping glass ceiling, opening up to the darkly towering buildings above. The 29 rooms are generic in their colour scheme (see above) and design, but they are clean and brightened by fresh flowers. Ask for one of the 8 rooms with a view of La Pedrera. The friendly receptionist and staff do their best, but overall this hotel fails to wow with either its design or ambience.
