The Hotel Colon is located within walking distance of the delightful shops and cafés of the Passeig de Gracia. The impressive Barcelona Cathedral stands opposite the hotel and Las Ramblas are conveniently close by, in the ancient Gothic Quarter of the city. This grand 1950s style hotel in Barcelona’s Gothic district captures the essence of the surrounding historic district of the city. Built as a traditional grand hotel, the 175 guest rooms are adequately furnished and comfortable. Bathrooms are a little old-fashioned with wall-mounted showers but they serve their purpose. Renovations are in progress throughout the hotel with the newly decorated rooms overlooking the Cathedral being more expensive. All rooms have air-conditioning, internet access, a safe and minibar.
Sitting on the old-fashioned furniture in the hotel’s lounge and café-bar, everything from the parquet wood floor to the china dog collection is reminiscence of times past. A huge grandfather clock continues to tick away the centuries while antique furniture and artwork adds to the atmosphere of slight neglect which runs through the Hotel Colon.
To take advantage of the location of the Hotel Colon, guests should request one of the Superior front rooms with views across the Square to the Cathedral and the bustling streets of the historic city. With full length windows and Spanish wrought iron railings around the tiny balconies, it is well worth the extra few Euros. The sounds of the city drift in – a distant brass band, buskers in the street below, youngsters laughing and Catalan residents doing their circle-dancing.
The day begins with breakfast served in your room or in the basement breakfast room. The hot and cold array of foods on the buffet is excellent. Service throughout the hotel is friendly and helpful from the multi-lingual staff. This grand hotel is not the most reasonably priced hotel in Barcelona, nor is it the most luxurious accommodation. The Hotel Colon is ideal for those who want to feel part of the Old Gothic Quarter of the city, within easy walking distance of the sights and restaurants nearby.
