Detailed Review
The location of the Neri H & R has been important in defining its decoration. The Gothic is a built up quarter, which is why an airy and spacious hotel has been intended. Guests will be immediately comfortable in all its rooms, but at the same time will be surprised by its anti-conventional decoration and by the magic of every corner. The Neri H & R is situated in a small XVIII palace, which has been totally restored and refurbished with total respect for the features of a building from that period. This hotel and restaurant has 22 select rooms and a carefully chosen menu. It also has a lounge library and a solarium terrace looking over the cathedral and the roofs of the gothic quarter. It has just two suites (one of which was occupied by John Malkovich for a month while his play Hysteria was done at a local theater), for those who need more space. Space is of the essence in the cramped Barri Gòtic and the Neri has the added advantage of a terrace for coffee and cocktails on the plaza and a rooftop garden overgrown with jasmine plants and creepers. It’s a shame they’ve felt the need to cram in sun loungers and it can feel a bit like a public pool when the place is busy. The somewhat overpriced gourmet "new Catalan cuisine" restaurant here is a further boon to followers of the super chef Ferran Adrià .
Press Quotes
"Interiors that are a luxurious study in textures: stone floors and walls, velvet couches, and crystal chandeliers. Sensual juxtapositions continue in the 22 rooms, which have rustic wooden tables beneath flat-screen TVs, dramatic silk drapes, rough-stone bathroom walls, and all-glass shower stalls." "The most romantic place to stay in central Barcelona, this intimate 22-roomed boutique hotel calls the Barri Gotic district home."
Terribly romantic, tucked away in a quiet corner of the Barri Gotic, this 17th-century palace conversion is, for us, Barcelona’s most charming hotel. By night, the roof terrace is filled with flickering candles.
Hotel Neri
By Jamie Dunford Wood
Of all the hotels in Barcelona, the Neri is probably the most romantically positioned. Gratifyingly difficult to find, the hotel is right in the heart of the Barrio Gotic in a maze of small streets and alleyways just steps from the Cathedral. It’s entrance is grand and unexpected in such an ancient space - tall double doors open up into a light, covered court area which acts as reception, its arched gothic interior and large lightwell revealing its origins as a medieval palazzo. The rooms Any hint of tradition is soon banished, however, when you step in the lift, where a dictionary definition of the word ’sensual’ is attempted on one side to prepare you for the sensual delights that apparently await you in your room. Each of the 22 is slightly different - the first floor rooms having the highest ceilings, some with beams. Floors are of wood, walls a greeny-fromage color, though colorways change slightly on each floor, with stronger colors on the second. Bathrooms are in granite; there are hanging filigree lamps beside the beds, and large colorful cushions and pillows. Each room has a large flatscreen TV and CD player, and the minbars are stocked with Moet. The verdict With outdoor dining in a romantic off-the-beaten-track city square in summer, the Neri provides a quiet refuge in the heart of the city with panache and effortless style, and in historic surroundings.
