Detailed Review

Set at the intersection of Velazquez and Goya Streets, the Adler is in a completely refurbished building equipped with the most modern facilities, but whose nineteenth-century charm and secluded atmosphere have been carefully maintained. In this privileged setting, you will be just a stone’s throw from the Golden Triangle of Art (The Prado Museum, The Reina Sofia Centre and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection), the elegant shops on Serrano Street, the Castellana financial district and the magical historical quarters, or you can just take a relaxing stroll through one of the most evocative green spaces in Europe, the Retiro Park.

Press Quotes

"One of the newest and most elegant places to stay in Madrid, it offers grand comfort in a converted 18th-century palacete complete with neoclassical decor and an interior designed by Pascual Ortega, and featuring works by modernist artists such as Tàpies and Chillida." Frommer’s

    Hotel Adler
    By Jamie Dunford Wood

Before we go too overboard about this new hotel (opened Christmas 2000) we ought to point out it is on a busy road and can be a little noisy. It’s also not in the best location in Madrid - but it’s not bad either. But inside it is a masterpiece. The reception area gives nothing away - it could be the reception area of many new swanky hotels who get an expensive architect to design an interesting looking space. The hallway is floored in black and white tiling, and what looks like expensive garden furniture does not look too inviting to sit on, while candles in large Conran-esque glass jars make one a touch nervous. The lighting is Spanish chiaroscuro, subtle, concentrating the light into little pools. However, there’s just a glimpse of a blood red stairwell on the far wall which whets the appetite. The 45 rooms are arranged on four floors in an old 19thC former bank building. The rooms are immediately inviting, and each feels it has had personal attention from the designer. Once again it is the lighting which strikes you. Each has a little lobby area with mirror paneled in-built wardrobes, while inside the tones are beige and brown, tobacco and cream, but with wall fabrics of different textures and hues. The furniture is beautifully crafted classic reproduction in dark wood, upholstered in elegant modern fabrics (the sofas button-upholstered), and the shutters outside the windows lend the rooms a cocoon-like effect, with un-swagged classic curtains to the floor, echoing, in some cases, soft drapes behind the bed. Ceilings are tall and corniced, doors are pedimented, lending the rooms a classical feel. Into the beiges and creams there are the odd splashes of colour - a red armchair, an abstract modern painting or numbered print on the wall, unfailingly tasteful. Some rooms have simple marble fireplaces. All rooms are of a decent size, while the superiors are big, with large bathrooms featuring free standing baths and large double showers. These are generally to be preferred to the two room suites, which have smaller spaces. As the floors advance, the windows become a little smaller and the ceilings lower, while the corner rooms have walk-out, glassed conser vatory balconies, with topiary sculptures on the balconies of the other rooms on the first three floors. The fifth floor is to be avoided in summer, as it gets very hot, and is under the eaves. Each floor has one interior room, which may be preferable, because the noise of the street, although faint, is the main drawback. The hotel is at in the heart of the busy commercial and shopping district of Madrid - lively and un-touristed, at the intersection of Velasquez and Goya - and the historic center is walkable.
