Jacques Garcia’s 2003 renovation has turned La Reserve into one of Geneva’s most sophisticated hotels. A little way out of Geneva on the Lausanne road, the approach in initially unappealing - the building itself is a modern low rise overlooking the lake, behind a busy road. But ten acres of grounds and spectacular views of the lake and Mont Blanc mean that you’ll be looking elsewhere most of the time.
Inside, Garcia’s African safari theme might also seem out of kilter with the more sedate style of this part of Switzerland, but it’s been executed with his usual flair, wit and attention to detail, and works magnificently. Details include a choice of pillows and sheets, complimentary minibar drinks, and underwater music in the spa.
Oh, the spa! It offers a huge range of treatments in 17 treatment rooms, from aroma and hydrotherapy to Ayurvedic massages and hot stone treatments. A kids club will look after the little ones, so its family friendly too, though they are banished to the outdoor pool, so more family friendly in summer than in winter. The rooms are dark and cossetting, each themed slightly differently, with DVDs and flatscreens. Downstairs, the bar is humming most nights with local custom.
