"Sophisticated, traditional medieval manor house in idyllic surrounds"
Unapologetically traditional and refined, with no spa or corporate meeting space. For a formal country house weekend, the real deal.
Buckland Manor
By Angela Moore
A tawny Cotswold stone manor house in idyllic surrounds, Buckland Manor is the real thing. There are no spas, no corporate facilities, no day visitors to ruin your experience of the country house hotel as a traditional, grand weekend retreat. This is perhaps why it has flown below the radar of the mainstream press it feels like a real discovery.
The house itself is a dream. Parts of it date back to the 13th century, much of it is fine Jacobean. It was in private hands until 1982 and much of the furniture and many paintings came with the house when it became a hotel, so there are some beautiful things. Its traditional, with its fair share of chintz, but its all so elegantly and discreetly done. There are only 13 bedrooms, all large, with four-posters and lovely sweeping views. There are flagstone floors, Axminster carpets, lots of open fires and a three-Rosette restaurant that serves three meals a day. Staff appear to be omniscient. The grounds are out of this world 12 idyllic acres, much of it planted.
Admittedly, Buckland Manor is good for retired colonels, but its also for anyone seeking a serious country house experience. And through it all it still manages to be very warm, very welcoming, very unstuffy. We fervently hope that it remains a well-kept secret.
