Detailed Review

Situated in the heart of London's Theatreland, with an intimate charm no large hotel can match. Hazlitt's occupies three historic houses in Frith Street, Soho Square. When these were built in 1718 there were no elevators, but we've updated the plumbing, installed bathrooms and replaced most of the candles with electricity. Each of the 23 rooms at Hazlitt's are named after 18th- and early 19th-century residents or visitors to the house. Today it is home-from-home to transient celebrities and dignitaries as well as latter-day ladies and gentlemen of leisure looking for somewhere quiet, discreet and very, very English.

Press Quotes

"Robust antiques are everywhere, most beds are four-posters, and every room has a Victorian claw-foot tub in its bathroom. " Fodor's 08

    Hazlitt’s
    By Vanessa Kaoukji

Three town houses on Frith Street in Soho hide within their walls a cozy, discreet hotel which oozes history. Named after William Hazlitt, the writer who died here in 1830, each room in turn is named after a resident or guest who stayed at the house at some point in its history. The hotel is so discreet that even some London cabbies don’t know there is a hotel on Frith Street. Not much more in the way of service than breakfast or a light snack, and public space limited to a small drawing room holding signed publications of the authors who have stayed there (Ted Hughes, Yann Martel, JK Rowling among others). But this is the heart of Soho and who wants to sit in the hotel when Bar Italia, just down the road, offers an all night people-watching venue. And with your own front door key to the hotel, you’re invited to treat this place like home. All 23 rooms are furnished with heavy Victorian mahogany. Beds are either four poster or mahogany backed. They are large and inviting in rooms which are small but no less inviting. Bathrooms are a Victorian delight - brass fittings, roll top bathtubs and bucket-sized showerheads. The Jonathan Swift and Mary Barker rooms are my favourite.

  • "A truly bohemian bolthole, this eclectic boutique hotel in Soho fuses old-school charm with neo-Victorian chic."

TI's top choice for charm in London (though the sister hotel, the delightful Rookery, is not far behind.) One for fans of the eccentric and readers of Dickens.
