Hyde Park Mandarin Oriental
By Mary LussianaMy first memory of being in a hotel was here, when as a child, breakfast was brought in to our room with huge silver cloches sitting on our cooked breakfasts. I still remember the mirrored shimmer as the waiter ceremoniously removed them. This is a grand old dame of a hotel, sitting between the park and the shops, dignified, immoveable and absolutely part of London. Now part of the Mandarin Oriental group, it has been brought into the 21st century with faultless taste appealing simultaneously to the business traveller for its efficiency, the tourists for its location, the Spa junkie for it superb facilities and me for the memories of the many events which have taken place there since that first breakfast.

"Top Knightsbridge dog overlooking Hyde Park"
Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park
By Matthew Barker
Wonderfully well-to-do Grand Dame whose recent swank revamp has given plenty of upstart boutiques nearby a run for their money. The chic of it. The rooms have kept their plush allure however, and the lobby area and stately exterior are as impressive as ever. 177 rooms (23 suites). Member of The Leading Hotels of the World. Hotel Attractions: The Foliage restaurant is an enjoyably chichi showcase for some fine mod European cooking, linked to the dapper Mandarin Bar, with its eminently nickable coasters, via a corridor of wine cellars. International dishes at The Park (with great views of the lower reaches of Hyde Park); afternoon tea in the Loggia. The new spa boasts a sanarium (like a sauna, only more so), vitality pool and Zen relaxation area, where you can listen to calming music on headphones and sip specially blended herbal tea. Local Attractions: Knightsbridge: Harrods is just across the road (it does, of course, get fiercely busy at times, and can be something of a let-down - although the food hall is always a treat) as are Sloane Street and Harvey Nichols. Kensington and the museums are a five-minute cab ride away. Modish Italian eatery Isola has never really taken off (probably because of the barmy prices), Floriana, Vong and The Fifth Floor (part of Harvey Nichols) are better bets; fish restaurant One-O-One always worth a punt.
