Located in the centre of Rye, East Sussex, the hotel was recently renovated to create one of the most stunning hideaways on the south coast. The building dates from 1575 and has enviable heritage; it even has an original Georgian ballroom used for lavish weddings and banquets. An eclectic and contemporary design has been given to this historic fabric using a wide range of antique and modern furniture, materials and local art. The result is a comfortable blend of old and new, to create an atmosphere which is relaxed, informal and individual.
The focus of the bedrooms is comfort. Sourcing the finest beds and linen on the market was the starting point. Each bedroom was then individually designed with its own fabrics, colour scheme and bespoke furniture. Beautiful marble-top baths with chrome power showers and Aveda products. Then add a few gadgets to complete the experience - flat screen LCD-TVs, a DVD library, Tivoli clock radios and broadband access. Deluxe and Junior Suites are particularly luxurious with some offering feature beds and walk-in showers.
The restaurant and bar form the heart of the operation. The Head Chef, Rod Grossmann previously worked at the restaurant Moro in London, owned by Alex's sister, Sam Clark. Rod's menu has Mediterranean influences and food is presented simply with slavish respect for fresh and seasonal ingredients, sourced from local farms and the trawlers of Rye Bay. The bar offers a large range of wine by the glass, including those from vineyards in East Sussex and Kent.
Rye itself is unlike any other town in England. A medieval townscape locked in time and with a fascinating history, it offers a great escape for relaxation or romance. Four miles from the white beach of Camber Sands the sea air is wonderful any time of year.
