"A Beaux-Arts gem on Fifth Avenue, The Peninsula is classy business hotel with sumptuous amenities and an impeccable concierge."
The Peninsula, New York
By Brian Johnston
Although the Peninsula boasts a magnificent Beaux Arts façade along Fifth Avenue, you might be disappointed at the less than overwhelming entrance around the corner on 55th Street. Fear not: as the bellboy in his rakish white hat swings open the door and you step inside, nothing else will let you down. The lobby is like a giant wedding cake of ornate plastering and pink roses, where cashmere-coated business people and Hollywood stars (of the right sort) pass to and fro. Up the sweeping staircase to the right, the reception area is business-like, even if surprisingly small; the Gotham Bar is the only real place to linger. The hotel’s upper floors have a health club and pool that overlooks steeples and rooflines; in the summer you can do yoga on the sundeck. As for the daring little Pen Top Bar, it perches dizzyingly over the twinkling lights of Fifth Avenue and makes a perfect late-night eerie. Efficient service with smiles, attention to detail and an uncanny combination of sophistication and cosiness make this one of the city’s best hotels, and the location, just blocks away from the Rockefeller Center, museums and Central Park, is second to none.
The rooms:
European antique-style furnishings might be all around you, but guestrooms at the Peninsula also have all the technological modernity of the hotel’s Hong Kong owners and the most self-indulgent of American bathrooms; indeed, possibly the best hotel bathrooms in all New York. Some of the views are more remarkable than others: the best gaze over the splendid architecture of Fifth Avenue. High-speed wiring, same-day laundry service, multi-speaker sound system and executive work station will keep you busy if you’re on business. For those wanting to relax, large marble baths await: control the bathroom television (in all but the standard rooms) from a panel beside you. In suites, shelves of books, mood lamps and comfy sofas encourage you to linger. Simple bowls of fresh tulips and roses add a hint of the country in downtown Manhattan.
